Worried about towel hygiene

By | Business Advice, News | No Comments

Worried about how clean your cotton towels are?   Washing machine manufacturers long ago recognised that people don’t time to hand wash their delicate items and they have installed cool-wash settings that, combined with modern detergents, promise to leave clothes clean and fresh after washing at what were previously unthinkably low temperatures. The problem is that bacteria have not cottoned on to the idea that low-temperature washes will get your laundry totally clean. And the problem is particularly obvious with cotton towels.   The simple fact is that microorganisms such as MRSA are a lot tougher than we give them credit for and can survive modern laundry cycles. Bleach-free detergents and low-temperature wash cycles we use these days are simply not enough to disinfectant the laundry.   So, you’re thinking, how does this affect me? Well, for those of you still using cotton towels in your salon, you’ll need to check…

Tea towels and food poisoning

By | Business Advice, News | No Comments

Tea towels and food poisoning   There have been a number of reports in the media recently linking tea towels to food poisoning! The reports stated that multi-use cotton or nylon towels used in kitchen had high levels of bacteria – in fact, bacterial growth was found in a staggering 49% of kitchen towels. Tea towels used to wipe surfaces had higher levels of bacteria than towels that were used for a single purpose only, like drying hands or dishes. Also, the amount of bacteria rose in larger families and families with children.   These reports are frightening and force us to examine what we use in the kitchen and how we use it. Reports advise that we should launder tea towels after every use. However, this can be expensive and time consuming. Plus most low temperature laundry cycles do not remove all bacteria. The research also recommends having a…

How To Spot An Eco Friendly Salon (by Layered Online)

By | Business Advice, Environmental Tips, News | No Comments

Eco, eco, eco, eco – repeat a word enough times and it loses its meaning and never has this rung more true than for ‘eco’. We’re all about sustainability, environmentally-friendly salons and organic solutions, but what does it all actually mean and how can you spot a salon that’s truly eco-friendly?   The very nature of a salon means it’s easy to be wasteful of resources and energy (think of all that washing, colouring and blow-drying), so by making conscious decisions about your beauty routine, and encouraging your local salon to make some changes, we can make a huge difference to our planet – one shampoo at a time.   Here’s what to ask when looking for an eco-friendly salon     DOES THE SALON USE AND SELL GREEN PRODUCTS?   There are a lot of brands out there nowadays that try to be as eco-friendly as possible, whether that’s…

Are rising energy costs a threat to your business?

By | Business Advice, Environmental Tips | No Comments

Are rising energy costs a threat to your business?   Hair and beauty salons are two of the most energy intensive businesses there are, so naturally rising energy costs are a concern to the industry. A new survey for Utilita Energy has revealed that 63% of independent hairdressers in the UK fear that the increasing cost of energy is crippling their future.   The survey also states that 42% of hair salons feel they get an unfair deal from energy suppliers, and 71% say they have been caught out by unexpected T&Cs such as crippling rates, inflexible payment terms, high deposits and extended contracts. These figures are quite scary, and naturally a cause of concern to any salon owner. Rising energy rates, coupled with high rents, wages and water charges mean that it can often feel like there is an endless supply of bills to pay.   The Utilita Energy survey also revealed that…
